Volcano Eruption Hawaii

Hawaii Volcano Eruption January 5, 2023

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. on January 5. 2923, a Hawaii volcano eruption surged hot lava from the Halema’uma’u crater in the center of the Big Island.

Big Island Volcano Tour

Visitors and rangers viewed the fountains of fire that roared hundreds of feet into the air in this desolate part of the Mauna Kea crater road.

The lava flowed from the crater floor, and within hours it had filled almost 300 acres of the dry lands along the crater road between the west and east coasts, roughly the size of 250 football fields.

The 2023 eruption was brief, those who were fortunate enough to be on the Big Island at that time booked every helicopter tour available within a few hours of the news.

Visitors Walk the Kilauea Crater Trails

Kapoho Bed & Breakfast, but so much more, our guests were like our family.

We hosted small groups and families that came to see the Volcanoes National Park.

We provided meals and dormitory-style sleeping areas.

Visitors came and went, we met many wonderful people from around the world.

The Tide Pools in Kapoho Hawaii

The Red Road

The Red Road hugged the coast along the eastern tip of the Big Island. It was like being in a dream with the natural beauty of tropical jungles.

At Pohiki we swam in the pond engineered by the Army Corps of Engineers during WW2, with hot and cold pools for snorkeling and swimming.

We lived there, on the east rift zone of the Big Island,  with many friends, for many years and it was the most fun I have ever had.

Papaya’s Plantation Kapoho Hawaii Volcano

We had a Bed and Breakfast in Kapoho Hawaii which was surrounded by Papaya farms, we named the place “Papaya’s Plantation”, there was a main house and 3 cottages.

Nearby there was a string of oceanfront tide pools that mixed thermally heated ocean water with the spring water that surfaced from beneath the ocean floor.

The entire coastal region was a snorkeler’s playground, and we enjoyed swimming in the 90-degree saltwater pond that mingled with the ocean at the coast.

The Village of Hilo was 16 miles away but it seemed much farther, it was like going to a different island.

Fresh Fish Directly From the Boat at Pohiki Harbor

Fishing boats came into Pohiki Harbor daily.

We served fresh fish for dinner along with homemade bread, papayas, bananas, mangos, salad greens, and purple potatoes, all locally grown.

Across the road were citrus and papaya farms.

There were 2 enormous avocado trees in our backyard, and by the way, there were steam vents on the trees. We knew it was only a matter of time before the volcano erupted again in this area.

Farewell to Kapoho Bay Hawaii June 2018

We grew to love Pele, the Goddess of Fire, and the legends & myths of the Hawaiian people.

The Puna District and Pahoa Town are the wild places on the island, a place that is “off the beaten path”.

Visitors from the mainland rarely visited Kapoho and the Red Road along the southeast coast of the Big Island.

For those who ask “why would anyone ever build a home on top of an active volcano?” Just watch this video.

I was there and it was the most beautiful place I have ever been, it was worth the risk.

My Hawaii Volcano Eruption Story

There Never was, and Never Will be
Another Place Like Kapoho Hawaii.

In June 2018, the Kilauea Hawaii volcano eruption flowed over the east rift zone wiping out Kapoho Bay.

Hundreds of beautiful farms and homes were destroyed overnight leaving behind acres of the new lava.

I was there and it was the most beautiful place I have ever been, it was worth the risk.

Pele, we learned to live within her territory, understanding her rules.

Madam Pele, Goddess Creator of the Hawaiian Islands

And we grew to love  Pele and the legends and myths of the Hawaiian people.

And then…… Pele decided to move from the mountaintop crater Halemaumau to the park headquarters.

She returned to the ocean through Kapoho’s beautiful farms and tide pools.

It’s not like a wildfire or hurricane, the landscape does not recover, and it is gone forever.

Farewell to Kapoho

Broken Heart for Kapoho Hawaii
Broken Heart for Kapoho and Leilani Hawaii

The Earth was quiet at the coast
There was a feathery mist moving across the lava
seeping from the heart of Pelé
goddess and caretaker of Kilauea
the fatal harvest of dark and light emerging
from the underworld
Transformation, fiery, moody, never merciful
power of the matriarch and caretaker
of mythical traditions imposed through the magic
upon the children of Hawaii
