You will need to check with the center before hiking within the park and to check on things to do, there is a daily schedule of ranger-led activities that you can join.

There is a park store at the Visitor Center where you can purchase books, posters and other educational materials.

The Visitor Center is a short distance beyond the park entrance station where there is plenty of parking.

The Big Island volcano has been making news in 2018 as the Kilauea Crater erupts and spills molten lava into the rural neighborhoods of the east tip of the island.

There is no impact on the resort areas on the west shore of the Big Island.

The eruption is in its traditional location and only effects those who have chosen to live at the coast in the eastern foot of the mountain.

The neighbor islands are not effected by the Big Island volcano eruption as there is a significant distance between the islands.

The National Park Service has designated the following fee free days for 2019:

Monday, January 21 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Saturday, April 20 – Start of National Park Week/Junior Ranger Day

Sunday, August 25 – National Park Service Anniversary

Saturday, September 28 – National Public Lands Day

Monday, November 11 – Veterans Day

Park entrance fees will be waived on these days.

Kauai Island is approximately 500 miles north of the Big Island and is upwind of the volcanic plume.

Visitors to other islands will not be impacted in any way.

The Big Island resorts and hotels are on the west shore.Kailua Kona and Waikoloa are quite far from the eruption and visitors will not be effected by the constantly changing volcanic action.

Big Island Volcano At Volcanoes National Park

The park is open and welcoming visitors.

Hawaii’s Big Island Volcano. Viewing the lava flow includes a visit to Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island.

The Hawaii volcano eruption is on the south side of  Mauna Loa, one of two major volcanic craters on the island.

Lava is frequently flowing from several vents within the park boundaries and beyond. Viewing from the museum at the edge of the crater is excellent, especially after dark.

Visitors to the park can check in with the Visitor’s Center which is just inside the gates.

Self guided touring is easy, you don’t need to pay for the guided tours unless you want to relax and enjoy the narration.

Those staying on the west side the the island in Kona or Kohala districts could book a “Circle Island Tour” and leave the driving to the tour operator.

We recommend an overnight stay at the Volcano Lodge within the park or in Hilo at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.
